Fighting for the Smallest Goal--WFMU Emergency Marathon

Things are bad around here when I am too lazy to even clean up the spam in the comments' section or fix the dead links on the right side of this page. Suffice it to say my level of motivation to put words on the page is roughly at zero right now (but thanks to the commenter who wondered if the reason I am not writing is because I am "back in the nut house").

Still, in case I am still on anyone's RSS feed, I wanted to mention that WFMU, the best radio station in the world, is having an emergency fund raising marathon starting tonight at 7PM EST. The station is commercial free and totally listener sponsored, its operating budget generated during an annual pledge drive in March. Tonight's marathon is a 24-hour version of that fund-raising effort, organized to deal with some kind of budget crisis at the station.

Even if you don't have the desire or ability to pledge tonight, WFMU is something worth checking out (the station is located in Jersey City, NJ, but the live stream is easily accessible on the web, and there is an iPhone app that works surprisingly well), as it is pretty much the only radio station of its kind, devoid of corporate influence and known for its eclectic, "free form" approach to broadcasting.

The station also keeps a comprehensive online archive on its site, so if you hear a DJ whose show you like, there are probably many hours of previous shows to swim through. For the past four months, Tom Scharpling's The Best Show on WFMU, on Tuesdays from 8-11PM and also available as a podcast, has accompanied almost all of my online poker playing. Dozens and dozens of hours.

Scharpling puts on a unique show composed of a mix of music (he has an encyclopedic knowledge of everything related to rock 'n roll) and humor--alternative comics often stop by the studio, and the show is usually highlighted by a call from Scharpling's comedy partner, Jon Wurster, who assumes the persona of various characters, many of whom live in the town of Newbridge, NJ.
